Finished, terminado, finito, igitur perfecti - May 26, 2014

We are officially finished with the Big Kitchen Reno!!!!

Six months to the day.  Half a year.  It is hard to believe.  When we started this incredible journey, we had no idea how long it would take, how much we would learn, and how fun it would be.  And, honestly, how proud we'd be of the final product.  Bonus - our marriage even survived!

The finishing touches have happened -

All cabinets are complete, touch up paint is done, trim is installed, and they are absolutely gorgeous!!!

The long anticipated beautiful pendant lights - including fully functioning dimmer switch - are installed and they, too, are absolutely gorgeous!!!  I love them even more than I thought I would when they arrived last November.  (Nota bene:  of all the stuff we've done in the last six months, the installation of this dimmer switch was by far the most frustrating part of the whole project.  It took two switches, one electrician, several trips out here by my parents, and a whole Sunday to get these three little lights hung and working.  But they're worth it!)

Not sure we're ever going to get these dang things level!!!

Last day of parental supervision!  Mom is out of the photo holding Doozy...

And the mantle.  This is the last part of scope creep for this project.  We've never had a mantle before, and we originally thought we'd just have a simple floating shelf painted the same grey as the cabinets.  That is until we saw a bench outside of one of our favorite restaurants...and the new mantle idea was born.  It is made of Eastern Red Cedar and finished with clear polyurethane.  They kept the natural bark-line for the outside edge too.  It is so, so beautiful and we're very in love with it!!! Photos are time-lapse throughout the month of May...

So, it is finished.  All done.  The contractor quoted us 3 months and a whole lotta money.  We did it in 6 months and for $69,000 less than they quoted.  Hee hee!!!!

And on that note, time for a couple of gratuitous animal photos and we're calling it good.

 Max, the amazing Pionus Parrot!

Doozy, the most beautiful girl in the world!

Team Wende - out!

At Last - May 2

Etta James is rolling through my brain with "At Last...". What a great song and what a perfect earworm for today.  Rainy gross day but a really great day too!!!  Our cabinet door installation happened (mostly, keep reading)!!!

First off, the Dooze had no interest in getting out of bed this morning...

And then, it was time to empty the kitchen drawers...again...

And here's a blurry pic of all the doors sorted by size and ready to go...

Drawer fronts and door handles...

One last reminder of how it looks before doors...

Here we go!! Bags and bags of hinges!

First door going up!

It's a real beauty, isn't it?!

Doors, glorious doors!  (apologies to "My Fair Lady" )

Fast forward to the installation of door pulls - here are my gorgeous twenty nine dollar laundry room cabinets with their doors and pulls installed!!! Aren't they purty??

Bev will appreciate the pineapple - I was with her at the best Goodwill *ever* when I found this a couple of years ago.  Finally figured out how to mount a 3-D item on the wall.  Amazing "command strips".  They are the bomb!

The sink side!!! Including our Costa Rica cross on the wall.  Ahhhh....home!

Wait!  There's something missing from the photo below...yeah well, turns out, the sink and the cooktop take up too much space for a drill or nail gun to fit in to mount the fake drawer fronts so the cabinet door guy is having to get some of the right clamps so he can install them without nails or screws, or nailing them from the front.  Agreement all around on that, but still, dang...not quite done - but close enough to call it good.  It'll be fixed in the next few days.

What's next?  My beautiful, gorgeous, wonderful pendant lights.  First thing I bought for this project...last November!!!  That happens Sunday!

#1 Niece graduates from The University of Florida tomorrow, so we have plans for that!  Congrats Big A (and her parents)!!!

More pics Sunday!
